No doubt about a hard fight John. Eventually they'll have to come to the conclusion that it would have been easier to tell the truth from the beginning than to serve a master whose bottom line is not our good health.
It seems every day the medical profession is proving Napoleon right.

Hi Leah,

Thanks for taking time to read my post. The study's funding disclosure is as follows, Funding: BL is supported by the American Gastroenterological Association’s Foundation research scholar award. ATC is supported by the Massachusetts General Hospital research scholars award and National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants K24 DK098311 and UM1 CA186107. WCW is supported by NIH grant UM1 CA167552, EBR by grant R01 HL035464, QS by grant R01 HL035464, and FBH by grants R01 HL060712 and R01 HL034594.

The abbreviations represent the authors of the study. It appears that the study was funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health.

I believe the motive behind the study was a response to a study that suggested a GFD might help celiacs reduce their risk of heart disease.

The study made this statement, "Patients with celiac disease may have an increased risk of myocardial infarction and death from cardiovascular disease that is reduced after diagnosis of celiac disease, possibly owing to the beneficial effect of a gluten-free diet, although this association is controversial."

This Swedish study was then cited, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2036.2004.02008.x/full" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2036.2004.02008.x/full</a>

I believe the mainstream medical community (MMC) had to devise a study to dispel the implications of the Swedish study.

A possible association between a reduced risk of heart disease after a GFD in celiacs is extremely problematic for the MMC.

It raises the question of why. If it has to do with reducing the inflammatory response caused by gluten then that might also hold true for non-celiacs who also experience inflammation after gluten ingestion.

If that association is proved or even considered as a possibility then the MMC would have to recommend that a large segment of the population go GF. This would mean that their advice that whole grains are a healthy choice for all non-celiacs would be wrong.

The MMC has already lost a lot of credibility over the cholesterol and sugar issues. I think they'll fight hard not to lose over gluten.

Hi John, probably should have read this when I wasn't so tired...but...does it say anywhere exactly who commissioned the study? And why?

I've learned over time to take absolutely nothing the medical community says at face value when it comes to studies...unless they state clearly who paid for it, and why it was done. Meaning...there is very little they say that I find worth reading or listening to.

Hi Gloria, Thanks for stopping by. Not really. My headline is quite accurate. The researchers did say that a GFD may harm your heart. I also cast doubt on the assumption by asking, "is it true". If the media wanted to present a non-sensational headline they should have said a GFD in the absence of dietary fiber may harm your heart.
