You know how sometimes you stumble upon a recipe that just sings to you? That was me with Simple Creamy Lemon Posset. It’s a dessert that feels like a fancy restaurant dish, yet it’s so easy!

But today, I thought, “Why not shake things up a bit?”

Enter orange posset: sweet sunshine in a cup. It’s like taking a warm hug from the sun, and honestly, the difference is subtle. While lemon is bright and zesty, orange wraps you in a mild cozy sweetness (with half the added sugar) that’s just divine.

While posset may sound sophisticated, it’s surprisingly simple and incredibly delicious. This delightful treat dates back to medieval Britain, where it was initially a hot drink made from sweetened, curdled milk mixed with wine or ale, often given to help with colds or fevers.

These days, posset has transformed into a chilled dessert that has remained popular for a reason: it’s rich, creamy, and bursting with citrus flavor.

And the best part? It’s a no-bake dessert!

Don’t miss my complete selection of gluten-free dessert ideas, where you’ll find more no-bake options like gluten-free chocolate cream pie and delicious Dark Chocolate Drizzled Strawberries In Yogurt!

Orange posset is a great way to end a light dinner, providing a satisfying dessert without being too heavy. Enjoy it alongside dishes like Orange Herb Roasted Whole Chicken or the quick and tasty Pan-Seared Scallops in Beurre Blanc Sauce.

So we’re swapping lemons for oranges in my latest dessert craze: posset! This orange posset is all about vibrant flavors and that luscious, velvety texture we love. Perfect for any occasion (or just because), it’s an easy way to brighten up your dessert table.

Alright, grab your oranges, and let’s go make some posset!

Ingredients

The cool thing about posset is that it thickens all on its own, no gelatin or eggs required!

Heavy Cream and Sugar: The Cream (I like organic heavy whipping cream) is full of proteins that naturally stay separated as we heat it and dissolve sugar in.

An Orange to Zest and Juice: Today, I have an organic navel orange. Valencia or even a Blood orange will work. Zest is grated from the very outer layer of the orange peel, so choosing organic when you can will help you avoid unwanted residues (pesticides, wax coating, etc.). Either way, wash the fruit thoroughly and dry it completely. Clean, dry skin gives you brighter citrusy flavor and keeps the zest light and fluffy instead of sticky.

Fresh squeezed citrus juice changes the acidity of the cream and makes those proteins in the cream come together, turning the liquid into a smooth, rich gel. The orange zest adds a vibrant burst of citrus flavor and aroma to the possets.

It’s pretty amazing!

Here’s how I make it, along with some helpful tips I’ve learned over time.

To prepare orange zest, start by washing the orange with a vegetable brush. I wear cut-resistant gloves for added safety. Use a microplane to grate just the outer layer of the skin, avoiding the white rind. Rotate the orange slightly and repeat until you’ve got enough zest. If you don’t have a microplane, you can use the small holes on a box grater instead.

Next, juice the orange. You’ll need about 1/4 cup, which comes from one orange.

As you do this, take a moment to enjoy the fragrant aroma, the sweet scent of the orange filling the air. I like to do this by hand, but feel free to use a citrus juicer if that’s easier for you.

In a medium saucepan, heat the heavy cream and granulated sugar over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil. Constantly stir, until the sugar fully dissolves.

Once it’s boiling, lower the heat to a simmer to keep it gently bubbling. Keep stirring for about 3 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary to prevent it from boiling over. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens slightly.

Then remove the saucepan from the heat and mix in the zest and juice, making sure there are no pits, so the flavors blend into the cream. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to cool down a bit.

Give the mixture another stir to combine everything well. Then, using a fine mesh strainer, strain out the zest to ensure a smooth texture.

Carefully, pour or scoop the mixture (I like using an ice cream scoop to avoid mess) into six individual ramekins or any 4-ounce dessert dishes, making sure each gets a generous amount.

Finally, cover each ramekin with plastic wrap or lids (I place my ramekins in a pyrex dish with a lid) and place them in the refrigerator. Let them chill for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, until the possets are fully set.

And now, serve the creamy orange possets chilled and enjoy!

Serving suggestions

I love experimenting with traditional recipes and adding my own twist! I especially enjoy mine garnished with mint leaves, and with slices of orange and some berries mixed in.

I kept seeing this stunning dessert pop up on my Facebook feed (apparently it’s trending on TikTok too!). Lemon Posset.

When I checked the ingredients, I was thrilled to find out it’s completely gluten-free. I just had to try it, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! It’s perfectly creamy and sweet with a delightful tang of lemon, truly a taste of summer in every bite.

Incredibly easy to make, it’s one of the most delicious desserts I’ve ever had. It tastes just like a gourmet treat from a high-end restaurant, making it perfect if you’re hosting a fancy dinner and want to wow your friends.

Serve it as a refreshing palate cleanser between courses or as a grand finale dessert!

Pair it with dishes like Gluten Free Sole Meunière or fast and flavorful Stir Fry Chicken With Baby Spinach And Mini Peppers. It’s the ideal finish to a light dinner recipe, offering a satisfying yet not overly filling dessert.

From the first taste, I knew Lemon Posset would become one of the favorite gluten free dessert recipes in my house, and I’m sure it will in yours too.

Sometimes, the simplest cooking methods yield the most delightful results. This recipe requires only 15 minutes of hands-on time, but the real transformation occurs during chilling.

Posset might sound fancy, but it’s actually quite straightforward and absolutely delicious.

Originating from medieval times in Britain, it was originally a hot beverage consisting of sweetened, curdled milk blended with wine or ale, commonly served to alleviate colds or fevers.

Nowadays, it’s a chilled dessert that has stood the test of time for good reason. It’s rich, creamy, and packs a punch of citrus flavor.

Can I transform this into a Lemon Posset Brûlée?

Links are affiliate links which means I will earn a small commission if you buy the item at no extra cost to you.

Absolutely. Just before serving, sprinkle a bit of sugar on top of each posset and use a kitchen blow torch to brûlée the sugar. Then, chill the possets in the refrigerator for an additional five minutes.

Okay, let’s return to the kitchen to whip up our posset. It’s surprisingly easy to make, which is always a win in my book!

Go on, grab those lemons, sugar and some cream, and treat yourself and your loved ones tonight!

Ingredients

Sugar and Cream: These ingredients form the base of the posset, providing richness and sweetness. The cream (I like organic heavy whipping cream) contributes a smooth texture and a luxurious mouthfeel, while the sugar balances the tartness from the lemon juice.

Lemon Juice: The acidity of the freshly squeezed lemon juice plays a crucial role in the posset’s preparation. When heated with the cream and sugar, the lemon juice causes a reaction that helps the mixture to thicken and set. This chemical reaction is essential for achieving the desired creamy consistency of the posset.

Lemon Zest: Grated from the lemon peel, the zest adds bright citrusy notes and intense flavor to the posset. It complements the lemon juice by providing aromatic oils that enhance the overall lemony profile of the dessert, making it more vibrant and flavorful.

Since zest is grated from the very outer layer of the lemon peel, choosing organic when you can will help you avoid unwanted residues (pesticides, wax coating, etc.). Either way, wash the fruit thoroughly and dry it completely. Clean, dry skin gives you brighter citrusy flavor and keeps the zest light and fluffy instead of sticky.

Instructions with step by step pictures

*Free printable recipe card is available at the end of the post.

Step 1. Zest your lemon

To prepare lemon zest, start by washing and scrubbing the lemon with a vegetable brush. Use a microplane to grate only the outer layer of the skin, making sure to rotate the lemon to extract just the zest and avoid the bitter white pith. If a microplane is not available, the small holes on a box grater can be used as an alternative. I wear cut-resistant gloves for added safety.

Step 2. Juice your lemon

You’ll only need 5 tablespoons of juice from one or two lemons depending on their size. I do this by hand, but you could use a citrus juicer if you prefer.

Step 3: Combine Cream and Sugar

In a medium saucepan, bring the heavy cream and granulated sugar to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir constantly until the sugar completely dissolves.

Once boiling, reduce the heat to simmer to maintain a gentle boil. Continue stirring constantly for about 3 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent the mixture from boiling over.

Keep stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to thicken slightly.

Step 4: Add Lemon Juice and Zest

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the zest and lemon juice, without pits, so the flavors infuse into the creamy mixture. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to cool slightly.

Step 5: Prepare Ramekins

Stir the posset mixture again to ensure it’s well combined. Using a fine mesh strainer, filter out the lemon zest to ensure a smooth texture in the final dish. Now carefully pour or spoon the mixture (I use my ice cream scoop; it’s less messy) into six individual ramekins (or any 4-ounce dessert dishes) ensuring each one gets a generous portion.

Step 6: Chill to Set

Finally, cover each ramekin with plastic wrap or lids and transfer them to the refrigerator. Let them chill for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, until the possets are fully set.

Serve the lemon possets chilled and enjoy their creamy texture and bright lemon flavor.

Traditionally, lemon is used for its bright acidity, which balances the richness of the cream. However, you can experiment with other citrus fruits like lime or even orange to create different flavor profiles. Here’s my Orange Posset Recipe; the measurements are a bit different since oranges are larger and sweeter than lemons.

While classic posset is flavored with citrus, you can infuse it with vanilla, lavender, or even spices like cardamom or cinnamon for a unique twist.

Posset is delightful on its own, but you can garnish it with a sprig of mint, fresh berries or a fruit compote to add some contrasting flavors and textures.

Easily double or triple this recipe by using the slider in the recipe card.

Keep the possets in the refrigerator. They are best enjoyed within 2-3 days of making.

I hope you’re having a great summer! This past week it actually cooled down to 65 degrees one evening here in New York. That’s when I made this low-carb cottage pie with cauliflower mash. It’s a delicious comfort food for those days when you just want to curl up on the couch and watch a good movie with your family.

What’s the difference between cottage pie and shepherd’s pie?

Both are classic dishes of the United Kingdom made exactly the same way except traditional Gluten Free Cottage Pie is made with beef and Gluten Free Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb.

Cottage pie has always been a favorite dinner here in my house.

But, since John and I have started following a low-carb diet, I decided to try a low-carb version of this recipe, replacing the usual mashed potato topping with my Creamy Cauliflower Mash Recipe.

The result? Absolutely mouthwatering.

For an extra rich finish, I love dotting the top of these casseroles with butter or even some Whipped Bone Marrow — trust me, it’s like adding a savory little surprise that takes the flavor over the top!

What are the benefits of cauliflower?

Did you know that cauliflower is considered a nutrition superstar? It’s rich in nutrients, vitamins (especially Vitamin C), minerals, and antioxidants. It’s said to help prevent cancer and boost heart health and brain health.

And cauliflower’s versatility in the kitchen knows no bounds.

It can be roasted for a delicious Cheesy Cauliflower With Ham Casserole or riced to make a low-carb Seasoned Cauliflower Rice With Bacon.

I’ve used it to create flavorful dishes like Gluten Free Cauliflower Flatbreads, easy and delicious Cauliflower And Carrot Purée, savory Low Carb Cauliflower Stuffing, and more.

It’s an ingredient that’s easy to love in all its forms.

And today, you can make cauliflower mash taste just like mashed potatoes that traditionally top cottage pie. Promise. I think you’re going to love this low-carb version.⠀⠀

Also, I switched out the Worcestershire sauce found in most cottage pie recipes for Red Boat. All of Red Boat’s products are gluten-free. They don’t contain wheat or wheat by-products and are produced in a gluten free facility. The sauce ingredients are quite simple: just anchovies and sea salt.

Ready to make this dish come to life? Let’s take a look at the ingredients so you can get cooking.

Instructions

*Free printable recipe card is available at the end of the post.

Ready to cook up some healthy low-carb cottage pie? Here we go.

For cauliflower mash

First, steam your cauliflower florets until tender, about 10 minutes. Then purée the cauliflower in your food processor, adding the half-and-half, butter, salt, and pepper. If you want your cauliflower more creamy, add more half-and-half.

Now for the meat

Heat a little extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet. Add onion and carrot and cook on a low heat for 10 minutes. If you’re following a low-carb way of eating, you can leave out the carrots for an even lower carb count. Then, add garlic and cook for another minute. Next, add the ground meat and stir over medium heat, breaking up the meat with a spatula while it browns for 5 more minutes. Drain the beef mixture.

Low carb, gluten free gravy

Finally, you’re ready to make the gravy. For the base, you will need gluten-free beef stock. You can use store-bought gluten-free stock or make yours Homemade Bone Broth. Pour the stock into the skillet over the beef mixture and add the Red Boat sauce, tomato paste, salt, and nutmeg. Simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.

Then, transfer the meat with its gravy to a casserole dish. Top with your cauliflower mash. Dot the cauliflower with two tablespoons of butter. Bake for 40-50 minutes until golden. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve.

What goes with cottage pie?

This low carb cottage pie with cauliflower mash casserole could be a complete meal on it’s own. I suggest just serving it with a simple side salad and one of my tasty veggie dishes such as, Sautéed Broccoli With Garlic.

Pro tips and recipe notes

If you don’t have Red Boat, you can use Worcestershire sauce instead.

You can keep leftover cottage pie in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Just let it cool to room temperature before putting it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
