Review: Udi’s Gluten Free Frozen Pizza

Review: Udi's Gluten Free Frozen Pizza

Pizza is undoubtedly one of the most difficult foods to recreate sans wheat. Since going gluten free, my family has tried many different gluten free pizzas in search of one that would taste like those pies we remembered from our pre gluten free days.

Several weeks ago, I noticed that my local supermarket had begun carrying these gluten free frozen pizzas by Udi’s.

My family decided to give them a try, and we were delighted to discover that these pizzas taste almost like the real thing.

In fact, we couldn’t believe that something so delicious could be gluten free and had to check the box again just to make sure.

Quick Facts

Udi’s currently offers these gluten free pizzas in four different flavors: three cheese, pepperoni, Margherita, and spinach & feta. My family tried the three-cheese pie and the pepperoni pie. The thin crust is all-natural. It’s made with potato and brown rice flour, but we really couldn’t tell the difference between it and a wheat crust.

The pepperoni is uncured and nitrite free. The pies are slightly on the small side, perfect for 1-2 people. Indeed, the pizzas reminded my family of a gourmet pizza you might order in a restaurant.

We could not come to a unanimous decision on which flavor we liked more: the pepperoni adds a nice spicy flavor to the pie, but the three cheese is also quite tasty and can be piled with your own toppings. Both are generously covered with cheese and a savory tomato sauce.

Easy & Fast Prep and Cook Time

The pizzas come frozen. I let the pie defrost on the counter while I preheat the oven to 400°F. The pizzas bake for 12 minutes, and then cool for 5 minutes.

Cooking Tips

Udi’s advises not to use a baking sheet or a pizza stone when cooking the pizzas. I cook them directly on the oven rack; there are also directions on the package for how to cook the pizzas on a grill. I recommend adding your favorite toppings to the pies before baking in the oven or cooking on the grill.

Conclusion

These pizzas truly are the best frozen gluten free pizzas my family has tasted. Even the pickiest eaters at the Homestead have been devouring these pies. They’re perfect for a quick and delicious lunch or dinner. We definitely recommend Udi’s gluten free frozen pizzas.

Gluten free isn’t something that I need to worry about. I need to worry more about the cheese on top. Thanks for sharing though.

      Yes, Casi.
I understand the cheese allergy well. When one of my children had a sensitivity to dairy as a child, our neighborhood pizza place would prepare a section of our pie with just the sauce and no cheese.
      Have a great day.

I want to love these but am struggling with preparation. They turn out AWFUL on a cookie sheet, but I don’t have a dedicated oven (my partner is not gluten-free) so I have no way to cook them on the rack without a contamination risk. 🙁 I am actually surprised Udi’s didn’t think of that! Lots of people do not have dedicated ovens.

      Hello Allyson,
Here is a rack that you can dedicate for your gluten free foods. You can elevate your pizza over a dedicated baking sheet and voilà, you’re good to go.

Just discovered this delicious pizza. I always use their frozen bread so I thought the pizza might also be good. However, the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol seems high.

Excellent question, Bart. I don’t know the answer to that. Udi’s recommends oven or grill. I’ve only made them in the oven.
