Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

This easy gluten free apple pie is a delicious homemade pie you can whip up and serve hot from the oven in about an hour. The recipe uses a ready-made gluten free frozen crust for a hassle-free and delicious dessert. Try it today!

This post has been updated with new photos, more helpful tips and a video.

Irresistible gluten free apple pie on a plate with fresh whipped cream and a fork

Autumn has arrived, and with it comes my son asking me whether our local supermarket has gotten in his favorite gluten-free apple pies.

Like clockwork, he knows that they start to carry his favorite seasonal treat this time of year.

“I’ve been fancying apple pie,” he told me.

“Well, they’re not in the supermarket yet, but if you’re really craving a pie, I think I have all the ingredients to make you one.”

Want to know the best part?

Tucked away in my freezer just waiting to be transformed into a flakey and flavorful crust, I like to keep Kinnikinnick gluten-free frozen pie shells.

finished pie on a plateIf you would like to make a homemade crust, try this Gluten-Free Pie Crust.

When the pie was ready, I whipped up heavy cream to dollop on top.

My son’s eyes lit up, and I was delighted to hear those precious words, “Thanks, Mom.”

Now this apple pie is part of our 10 favorite gluten-free Thanksgiving recipe collection, perfect for spreading joy at both Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Love the taste of apples? You won’t want to miss my Gluten Free Apple Cider Donuts for another delicious autumn treat!

So with the pie shells at the ready, I got to work.

Crust update

I love Kinnikinnick brand for its flakiness and flavor, you can use your favorite homemade pie crusts recipe or gluten-free frozen pie crusts.  Just make sure to follow the instructions on the package for thawing and handling.

I’ve been making this pie for over ten years, and it’s always been a hit. It’s irresistibly delicious.

Today, I used Gillian’s gluten-free frozen pie crust, which worked wonderfully for my pie.

The Wholly Wholesome gluten-free pie shell I use in my gluten-free spinach pie recipe, is also certified gluten-free and quite delicious.

Both of these pie crusts recommend pre-baking (or blind baking) at 350℉ for about 10 minutes before adding the filling. This step ensures a flaky, crispy crust.

For the top crust, let it thaw slightly, and place it flat on top of the filled pie, crimp the edges to seal, brush the top with the egg wash, make a few slits for steam to escape, and then bake it all together at 375℉.

The finished apple pie photos you see are from today’s pie!

Homemade happiness made easy

Want to make the best gluten-free apple pie recipe using store-bought frozen crust? Let me show you how easy it is.

Each of the ingredients plays a crucial role in bringing together the flavors, textures, and overall satisfaction of this gluten-free apple pie.

Combined with love and care, they create a mouthwatering dessert that will have everyone asking for seconds.

Ingredients

  1. Gluten-Free Frozen Pie Crusts make an excellent, effortless, convenient choice for a gluten-free dessert.
  2. All Purpose Baking Flour is used to thicken the apple filling. Bob’s Red Mill GF flour is specifically formulated to be gluten-free and can be substituted for regular all-purpose flour in many recipes. It helps bind the ingredients together and creates a luscious, cohesive filling.
  3. Apples take center stage in this pie, providing the sweet, tart, and fruity flavors that we all crave in a classic apple pie. In this recipe, three large apples are peeled, cored, and sliced before being combined with other ingredients. If your apples are medium-sized, go with six apples.
  4. Lemon juice adds a bright and tangy element to the apple filling. It enhances the natural flavors of the apples and prevents them from browning.
  5. Cinnamon is the quintessential spice in apple desserts, bringing warmth, depth, and a hint of sweetness to the filling. It complements the apples beautifully, infusing the entire pie with its comforting aroma and flavor.
  6. Nutmeg is another spice that harmonizes perfectly with apples. Its earthy and slightly sweet notes enhance the overall flavor of the pie. Just a touch of nutmeg adds depth and complexity to the filling, making it even more delightful.
  7. Butter enriches the pie filling with its creamy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The slivers of butter placed on top of the apple mixture melt as the pie bakes, creating pockets of indulgent richness and adding a lovely buttery flavor to every bite.
  8. The beaten egg serves as a glaze for the top crust of the pie. It gives the pie a beautiful golden-brown finish and adds a touch of shine. The egg wash helps create an appealing appearance and seals in the moisture, ensuring a perfectly crisp and enticing crust.

Instructions

*Free printable recipe card is available at the end of the post.

To begin, take your pie shells from the freezer. Transfer one of the crusts from its aluminum pan to a pie plate. Pre-bake (or blind bake) it at 350℉ for about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, slice up your apples.

In a mixing bowl, combine your apple slices with lemon juice, warm spices, and a touch of gluten free flour for a deliciously rich filling.

Once the pie shell is pre-baked, prick it on the bottom and sides with a fork. Then turn your oven up to 375℉.

Spoon mixture into the pie shell that was pricked with the fork.

Ah! That fragrant aroma is already filling the kitchen.

But wait, there’s more! Just before sealing the deal with the second pie shell, add slivers of butter on top of the apple goodness.

It’s like adding a little extra magic to each bite.

prepare pie: pierce pre-baked pie shell with a fork, add apple mixture and dot with butter, top with thawed second pie shell, and bake.

With the shells securely pinched together and slits carved on the top for steam to escape, your masterpiece is nearly complete.

Before popping it in the oven, brush the top with a beaten egg, giving it that irresistible golden hue once baked.

Place the pie on a baking sheet, as experience has taught me that sometimes it likes to bubble over and create a bit of a mess. Better safe than sorry, right?

As the pie bakes the scent of warm apples and spices will fill the air, and the promise of a delicious dessert hangs in the balance.

Finally, after about 50 minutes, the crust emerges golden and crisp, ready to be admired and devoured.

Once out of the oven, allow the pie to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Serving suggestions

I served the apple pie with homemade whipped cream.

Alternatively, you could add a scoop of vanilla ice cream lightly dusted with cinnamon or opt for apple butter ice cream to enhance the apple flavors.

If you prefer, you can savor each bite of this classic delight unadorned. The choice is yours!

Pro tips and recipe notes

  • In the original recipe I used Granny Smith apples. They’re tart and tangy. Generally, we want firm apples. Honeycrisp and Braeburn are sweeter yet firm. But today, I have Delicious apples. The choice of apples will affect the sweetness and texture of the pie filling, so feel free to use your favorite apple variety or a combination of different ones as I do in my homemade applesauce recipe.
  • If your frozen pie shell is broken, thaw the shell. Then dampen the crack with water, and use your finger to seal the crack together by lightly pinching and pressing the dough.
  • Can I use a different gluten-free flour instead of Bob’s Red Mill GF All Purpose Baking Flour? Yes, you can experiment with other gluten-free flours. However, keep in mind that different gluten-free flours have varying textures and properties, so the results may differ slightly. It’s best to choose a gluten-free flour blend that is suitable for baking and can provide a good thickening consistency.
  • To keep leftover pie, once baked, allow the pie to cool completely, then cover it tightly and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, you can reheat it slightly in the oven or enjoy it chilled.

I hope you fall head over heels for this scrumptious creation, just as my son did. It’s a convenient gluten-free dessert option while maintaining the homemade touch.

Happy baking!
