Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Discover the secret to the best gluten-free French toast! This family recipe combines simple ingredients with expert techniques to create a delicious morning treat that’s free of gluten and full of flavor.

Gluten Free French Toast

The ultimate gluten free French toast recipe starts with the finest ingredients. Slices of your favorite gluten free bread are dipped in a cinnamony vanilla batter and cooked until golden. A mouthwatering breakfast, thanks to all the tips I keep up my sleeve to make mine better than everyone else’s.

Anyway, that’s what my son tells me.

This is the recipe you need to win over even the pickiest eaters.

What makes the perfect breakfast? French toast! It’s a classic, simple to make, and oh-so-delicious dish.

But when we went gluten free, we imagined that french toast would remain a fond and distant memory.

However, fear not! It turns out it can be made just as scrumptious with this spin off of my family recipe using gluten-free ingredients and gluten-free bread.

So it’s time for our happy dance.

Right away, French toast earned its place in my breakfast repertoire. If you’re craving more delicious gluten free breakfast ideas, be sure to check out the rest of my collection for inspiration!

You may be wondering…

Is French toast French?

While the exact origins of French toast are debated, it’s not definitively French. The dish has been traced back to ancient civilizations like the Romans and Greeks, who would soak bread in a mixture of milk and eggs before cooking it.

Variations of this dish exist in many cultures around the world. The term “French toast” itself is believed to have originated in 17th-century England. So, while it may not be exclusively French in origin, it has certainly become associated with French cuisine.

In France, it’s known as “pain perdu” (lost bread), referring to the stale bread they would use up that would otherwise be lost.

Speaking of lost bread, whip up some homemade Pancakes from Scratch with Gluten-Free Bread, this flavorful Gluten Free Matzo Brei made with gluten free matzo, or try your hand at these egg-free Pumpkin Spice Pancakes!

And guess what? The ingredients for quick and easy French toast are probably sitting in your pantry right now – milk, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla, extra-virgin olive oil, salt, nutmeg and of course, your favorite gluten-free bread. Plus butter to grease the pan.

Gluten free French toast ingredients: eggs, milk, vanilla extract, extra-virgin olive oil, salt cinnamon, nutmeg, gluten free bread, and butterIngredients

Milk: Whole milk or half and half adds creaminess and richness to the batter.

For a dairy-free batter, go with almond milk or coconut milk. Or a small quantity of water (about 1 tablespoon per 2 eggs) or even orange juice can be used as a substitute. They’ll all give a slightly different flavor, but can all serve their purpose in the recipe.

Eggs: Whisked with the milk for a rich batter base.

For an egg-free option, substitute the eggs with 1 cup of milk and 1/3 cup of cornstarch, arrowroot, or tapioca starch. Keep all other ingredients the same. Additionally, ensure you’re using egg-free gluten-free bread, which can sometimes be challenging to locate in stores.

Vanilla extract: Adds sweet, floral notes.

Extra-virgin olive oil: A little fat keeps your French toast moist and adds savory aromatic flavor.

Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt are a warm trio to enhance the overall taste.

Gluten-free bread: For today’s recipe, I’ve got some Udi Gluten-Free White Sandwich Bread on hand. Feel free to choose your favorite gluten-free bread brand. Opt for a sturdy bread or experiment with options like Schär gluten-free sweet brioche rolls or Udi French baguette. If you have homemade gluten free bread, allow it to sit out on the counter overnight. This will help it firm up.

Butter: Adds richness when frying. If you can’t tolerate dairy, a dairy-free substitute can be used.

So let’s dive in and whip up some delicious French toast!

For easier cleanup, whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, extra-virgin olive oil, and spices directly in a shallow dish (I use a pie plate) which you’ll then use for dipping the bread.

How to soak bread in milk, egg, and cinnamon mixture When using an electric griddle to cook more toasts at a time, set it to preheat at 350℉. Now generously grease your griddle or skillet with butter, about 1 tablespoon, over a medium heat until hot, but not smoking.

Cook your soaked bread for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Use a fork to assist in guiding the bread as you flip it with a spatula.

You want a nice soft center with slightly crisp edges.

Be sure to wipe you griddle after every batch and use fresh butter so that your butter doesn’t burn.

Expanding this gluten-free French toast recipe to accommodate more people or unexpected visitors is a breeze. Simply double the French toast batter—it’s that simple!

What do you eat french toast with?

Simply drizzling warm maple syrup on top is good.

But I think it’s especially yummy dusted with powdered sugar and garnished with orange slices and strawberries. Then serve hot drizzled with warm maple syrup.

You might prefer a pat of butter, honey, jam, candied nuts or even whipped cream. It’s up to you.

Or set up a buffet where people can customize their own toppings and sides. Crispy roasted potatoes, perfectly done bacon cooked in the oven, sausages, a fluffy frittata, and fruit salad are just a few sides to offer.

Pro tips and recipe notes

  •  Whisk your egg batter well so that you don’t end up with egg whites on your french toast slices.
  • Soak your bread in the mixture for a few seconds until it’s saturated for a creamy texture on the inside, but not so that it’s too flimsy to hold together.
  • Preheat your griddle on medium before putting your slices on so that they’ll start to cook as soon as they hit the pan, but not too hot that they’ll scorch.
  • Wipe you griddle after every batch and use a new pat of butter so that your butter doesn’t burn.
  • When cooking a number of slices, you can keep them warm in the 200°F/90°C oven until you are ready to serve everyone at the same time. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer not stacked or they’ll get soggy.
  • Leftover French toast can typically be stored in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. Just be sure to place it in an airtight container to help maintain its freshness. Reheat in the toaster.
  • To keep for a longer time, flash freeze them: arrange each piece of cooked and cooled French toast on a baking sheet in a single layer and place in the freezer for about 30 minutes to harden and semi-freeze. Then transfer to a freezer safe bag or container and store up to 3 months.delicious french toast on a fork
