Ingredients
Tomatoes: Opt for ripe, flavorful tomatoes. Varieties like vine-ripe tomatoes or heirloom work well. Look for vibrant color, firm texture, and a sweet aroma.
Mozzarella cheese: Fresh mozzarella that you slice yourself is ideal. It has a soft, creamy texture that pairs perfectly with tomatoes and basil.
Basil: Fresh basil is recommended for the best flavor.
Olive oil: It’s best to use a top-quality oil. Look for an extra virgin olive oil (EVOO); otherwise, it has been chemically refined. For the freshest olive oil, check the harvest date on the label and make sure it is within one year. The oil should come in a dark glass bottle and be stored in a cool, dark cabinet.

Oregano and salt: Oregano is my twist on the classic recipe. I salt the tomatoes and then sprinkle some oregano all over the finished dish.
Just slice, layer, season, and serve. It’s that easy. And it’s that good.

With a serrated knife, slice your tomatoes about a quarter-inch thick.
Then, slice your mozzarella about the same quarter-inch thickness. A wire cheese slicer works well for even size slices.
Arrange the tomatoes on a platter and season with salt.
Pro tip:
Prepare your salad components, and right before serving, sprinkle salt on the tomatoes. Adding salt too early may result in the tomatoes releasing excess juice.
Alternate slices of tomatoes and mozzarella on the platter, tucking fresh basil leaves in between. Sprinkle with oregano. Drizzle with olive oil.
Bam! What a beautiful appetizer for a special treat or appetizer to serve at holiday parties.

- Can I use flavored olive oil in my Caprese salad? Absolutely! Infused olive oils, like garlic or basil-infused, can add an extra layer of flavor to your Caprese salad. Adjust the quantity based on your preference.
- How do I store leftover Caprese salad? Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Keep in mind that the texture may change, so it’s best enjoyed fresh.
